Final Brazil blog

  Arthur
What a trip. It has been a hectic week since returning from Brazil on Tuesday. Like always the trip was great. We witnessed to 769 people and saw 329 people accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. GOD is Good. We had 1167 kids in vacation Bible School from Monday thru Thursday and we never had the same ones twice.

Our missionary Karen Gray told me about a young man that I witnessed to last year and how he and his brother were in the process of planting a church. God uses us to further His kingdom and most of the time we do not even  know  in what way.

I am planning to go back next year. I pray that those who read this blog will be moved to respond to the call to go on mission and join God in what he is doing around the world and in Brazil.

God bless and I will see you next year.

Home Again!

  Virginia
This past 10 days has been amazing! It was a lot of hard work and we were on the go just about all of the time. While our work in Nova Friburgo is down, the work for the new mission and the mother church will be continuing on. I don’t know all of the nubers exactly, but there were more than 300 people that received Christ into their lives. AMEN!!!

On our last night in Nova Friburgo we went to the mother church for a final service. While Pastor DJ gave a message about having victory in Christ he asked those that had accepted Christ while we were there to come forward. As continued with his message, our bus driver, Guilherme, went forward to receive Christ. Pastor Tony and his family had been praying for him for a long time. This made our last night even more perfect.

We made a lot of friends while we were there. And there will be a lot to share with everyone here about our experiences. I think it will take a bit of time just to process it all.

I am glad to be back home safe. I thank God for guiding our team on this journey and for working through us to effect a big change in the Marie Theresa community.

God Bless,

Virginia

Chapel Dedication this evening…

  Virginia
Hello everyone.

Friday night we had a cultural night at the mother church. It was an opportunity to meet with members of the community and church and speak English and share the gospel. I gave my testimony for the first time. To be honest…I lost it. When I think about how great God is and the way he has been working in my life I get very emotional. Through his strength I finished. I am so glad that I was able to do it!

This morning, Saturday, we went up to the community around the church to do a health fair. I don’t know how many people we saw but 49 of them accepted Christ today.

This evening we will be at the Chapel dedication. It’s hard to believe in 2 days we will be on our way back home.

Please continue to pray for us as our time here comes to a close. And please continue to pray for this community.

God Bless,

Virginia

My Heart Cries Out…

  John
Concluding thoughts:

1st Brazil was amazing!

| View Show | Create Your Own

Tony Gray told us that sometimes God will bring people thousands of miles away from their home to change the lives of others. Other times God will bring people thousands of miles away from their home to change their lives. I know that both my life and the lives of those I was honored to meet and share with were changed.

I can understand what Paul meant when he told the Philippians that God is my witness, how greatly I long for them with the affection of Jesus Christ The word translated affection literally means the internal organs, regarded by the first-century reader as the center of deepest feelings. The people of the Second Baptist Church of Nova Friburgo wrote us a poem to express their care and gratitude. They used a word that does translated into English in their poem: “Saudade” The best that Tony could explain it to us was that this was a “deep longing or desire for something” Perhaps this is how Paul felt about the Philippians and I feel about my new family in Brazil.

One does not have to leave the country to make an impact on the world. We just have to be willing to live life for Christ right here… today and everyday.

I made this video from the trip…. Check it OUT!

http://www.youtube.com/v/zmrB9iWAF6g

Consider this: Is it possible that God could so orchestrate our circumstances, experiences, education, personal development, emotions, mental and physical health, economics, intellect etc (for we [that is believers] are not simply not to be “spiritually” discerned [although many are deficient], but perceive and understand that we also have other aspects of life that are relevant to this living in this present day too; we are holistic beings created in the image of God) to mold us for the task that He has specifically for us?

Perhaps God knows the plan He has for our lives, and surely, in view of his character, it is a plan for us to prosper (perchance not by this worlds grading system), a plan of hope(a life worth living), and a future(an overshadowing purpose for life). As incredible and indescribable a our God is can one really imagine the great plans He has for our lives? Without doubt eye has not seen, nor has ear hear, nor has a mind perceived the things God has prepared for those who love Him.

Perhaps this is where the paradox begins…. I find myself at a loss for words at why life is so busy, yet seemingly so unproductive. Yet, maybe it is only unproductive from my perspective of things. How long did God prepare Paul, or David, the disciples. Throughout their entire lives. Therefore, I consider a beautifully woven tapestry. One side of course is simply a brilliant and excellent work of art….but note the reverse side. Herein we find the key to understanding the splendor of the front side. The back is where one finds bumps, knots, dangling threads…. Life is much like the back side of this tapestry. It too is full of bumps in the road, hard knots to work through, and dangling thread that seem to make the slightest bit of sense. Yet, perhaps, God is making me and you into the most elegant picture on the front side.

Perhaps this sorrow, this longing, this “saudaude” is but for a night; joy comes with the morning.

Perhaps this is where the paradox ends… Possibly I should not consume myself in mastering many things, but rather learning how to be mastered by one, excellent all consuming thing…. unless a grain a wheat falls to the earth and dies, nothing comes from it. But its death brings life anew and with an increase. I too must die. A generation must die. Die to self and have life in Jesus… or as they say in Brazil…

Can’t believe it’s Friday!!!

Virginia
I’m sorry this has to be such a short blog. Things have been going really great! The Lord is really working down here and through us. Yesterday while we were doing blood pressure checks and giving out glasses, 16 out of 17 nonbelievers accepted Christ. It was amazing.

Tonight a few of us will be giving our testimony. Please pray for us and for the rest of the trip.

God Bless!

The Participle of ´Going`

  John
If you look at the Great Commision you will find that it says to go and make disiciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that Jesus has commanded.

An interesting thing in the Greek is that the word `go` is a participle. This would imply the phrase `as you are going´ make disiciples, baptize them, and teach them how to be mature followers of Christ. One does not have to Go into another country to obey this command from our Lord.

This really impacted me last night after supper when we stopped to get ice cream. While in line at a local McDonald’s we had two young brothers come up to some of the members of our team asking them to buy some candy they had made. You could tell from looking at them that they were poor (they had no shoes for one thing) and the interpretor told us that they would probably sleep on the cold streets of Nova Friburgo tonight. This was heart breaking. If I could go back I would change my response….

This is what Jesus meant in the Great Commission when He said `as you are going`. As we go about our daily lives (recreation, work, school, bonding with family and friends etc) it is very important that we be on the lookout for the hurting, the overlooked, the people in the margins…. For to whom much is given is not much expected?

As you are going….

(thanks for this word Dr. T and Bubba)

WEDNESDAY, DAY 5!

  Virginia
Hello again!

Today we were able to go to the English schools to invite them for a Cultural Night at the church. It will be an opportunity for them to practice their English and for us to share our faith and our culture with them.

We also went to a school where we handed out hygiene kits to the kids. Our interpreter Patrick taught them a silly song and had us all jumping around, singing, and having a great time with them. It was a lot of fun.

We were blessed today as well. We had run out of glucose testing strips and Juan Marcos, music pastor at the mother church, was able to find a pharmacy that had what we needed. When we got there, the strips wouldn´t register in my ‘English’ monitor. the man at the pharmacy offered to switch his monitor for ours at no cost. This will allow us to check the older people who are more at risk for diabetes.

God is truly providing for us and keeping us safe.

Take care and God Bless!

Lots Happening in Brazil

  Arthur
While in Brazil, the weather is beautiful and the people are so loving.
The VBS group has shared Christ with over 500 kids with over 50 decisions made for Christ.
The nursing team has given out about 800 hygene kits and taken over 300 blood pressures from Brazillians and given out over 300 reading glasses.

The chapel has the trusses up and is waiting to be painted and have the roof put on.  The construction site has a very majestic view and is up a mountain so steep that the bus cannot go all the way to the chapel.

If this site was in the states it would be worth a million dollars.

An interesting thought for you: When all the team comes in at night to shower, the electricity goes off due to the electric shower heads.

Everyone is well and is has having a great time.

Monday night we went to an Italian resturant in Brazil and had chocolate pizza and banana pizza.  We hurt ourselves eating so much.

Please continue to pray for the American team and the Brazilians and we share the Gospel with everyone we come in contact with.

What a day!!!

VirginiaToday was awesome!!!!

We started our day going to the local university to meet with the nursing students there. Mrs. Younce gave a talk to the students. Her talk centered around how through her faith in God, she views each and every patient as the image of God when she cares for them. John also shared his testimony of faith that led him into a nursing career. It was very powerful. The students told us that they were touched by what was shared with them. One of the students, Liz, is a Christian that works as a witness with a missionary group out of Florida. She told us that some of the students there today had not accepted Christ. She was thankful for what John and Mrs. Younce had said because it opened the door for her to share her faith with these other students.

After lunch we worked at the Second Baptist church that is our mother church. We did blood pressures, glucose checks, and handed out reading glasses. It started off kindof slow for about 30 minutes. Then we were so busy it was hard to keep up. A couple of young men from the church, Bruno and Andre, came and helped us with the translations. They were a huge blessing! They also said it gave them an opportunity to practice their English. We saw somewhere around 170 patients in less than 3 hours.

I just have to say…GOD IS GREAT!!!

This trip is GREAT and we´ve got more work to do.

Goodbye and Chao!!!
